Visalia Times-Delta

The Central Cal War Angels (8-0) open the Women’s Football Alliance national playoffs against the Portland Shockwave (5-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Groppetti Automotive Visalia Community Stadium.

The winner of Saturday’s playoff will advance to face either the Seattle Majestics (8-0) or the Utah Jynx (6-2) on June 22. This year’s WFA championship game will be played in San Diego on Aug. 3 and will air on ESPN3.

The undefeated War Angels clinched a Division XII championship and home field advantage for the first three round of playoffs with a 55-6 win over the Sacramento Sirens in records breaking 109-degree heat on June 8 at Visalia’s Giant Chevrolet-Cadillac Mineral King Bowl. Chantel Wiggins threw for over 200 yards and four touchdown to receivers Jamie Fornal (2 TD’s), Lisa King, and Beth Gutierrez. Runningbacks Destanie Yarbrough and LaStar Brown both rushed for a combined 200 yards and four touchdowns.

On defense, the War Angels limited the Sirens, who averaged over 40 points per game in the regular season, to just one touchdown. Jeannette Jimenez and Lisa Castodio shut down the Sirens running game, while Cornerbacks Tiffany Martin and Kenna Hartman combined for three interceptions.

The War Angels outscored their opposition 327-48 with three shutouts during the regular season.
